Reiki is an ancient, hands-on, gentle, energy healing system. The Japanese word Reiki (pronounced ray-key) describes a system for tapping into universal life force, sometimes referred to as chi or Qi (pronounced chee) the energy that creates and sustains all life. This energy is in the world around us, is within all living things, and also surrounds us (our aura). It runs through the earth, plants, animals and humans. The proper flow and amount of this energy is essential to our health and well-being. When there is not enough life force energy or it is moving too slowly than illness may result.
Reiki is a method for connecting life force energy with our body’s innate healing ability. Reiki infuses the body (while being channeled through a Reiki practitioner) with a concentrated amount of this vital life energy and assists in the restoring of balance on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels.
While hands-on healing, in its many forms in different cultures, is thousands of years old, this particular form was rediscovered in the 1850’s in Kyoto, Japan, by a Japanese spiritualist, Mikao Usui. Dr. Usui with his colleague, Dr. Hayashi, developed the Reiki protocol, which was later brought to the United States by Mrs. Takata in 1973.
The attunement process, rediscovered by Dr. Usui while reading ancient Sanskrit texts makes Reiki unique amoung many different healing modalities. A practitioner learns Reiki and takes part in an ancient ritual which fine-tunes and balances the student’s energy system, empowering him to be a conduit for channeling universal life energy. After receiving the Reiki atttunements, as Mrs.Takata explained, you are tuned to the universal life force as a radio is tuned to the radio wave.
How does Reiki work?
The knowledge that unseen energy flows through all living things and directly corresponds to one’s quality of health, is part of the wisdom of many cultures since ancient times.
Reiki functions on the energy body first, usually following the same channels (merididans) used in acupunture. Reiki heals by moving through our personal energy fields and charging them with positive energy. In doing so, it raises the vibratory level of our energy and causes the negative thoughts and feelings to break away. Reiki practitioners visualize a series of symbols to increase the effectiveness of the energy. Reiki clears, heals and strengthens the energy pathways, correcting disease and imbalances. The physical body’s natural healing processes are encouraged to function and are increased in effectiveness. Energy is therefore allowed to again flow through the body in a healthy and natural way.
Giving Reiki is a simple process that happens automatically. All the practitioner has to do is place their hands on the person or animal wishing to receive the energy. The patient draws the Reiki energy to the areas of need.
With Reiki the receiver is always completely in charge of how much energy is drawn and what that energy is used for. The effects are always for the highest healing good, since that is the very nature of universal life force.
Why use Reiki?
Reiki will:
Reiki is a gentle and safe method of healing which can be used for any health problem, whether physical, emotional, mental or spiritual. Stress, depression, anxiety, headaches, migraines - these common complaints are relieved by Reiki treatments. More serious diseases, from diabetes to cancer, also respond well. Anything - any ailment, illness, disease, acute or chronic, all respond to Reiki.
Reiki may not fully cure the illness or complaint (though in some cases it has been known to) but it will promote relaxation and calm in the client, encouraging and increasing the body’s own natural healing processes.
Reiki will not interfere with any other medications or treatments, though it can boost their effectiveness. It complements all other types of alternative therapies and traditional medical techniques.
Please remember that Reiki is not a substitute for any medical advice or treatment. If you are unwell, please see your doctor as soon as you can. Reiki practitioners are not trained in diagnosis: if you are concerned about your symptoms you should see your doctor.
